On Friday 13 August 2010, I received a message from a friend on facebook telling me about a meeting to stop crime in Lenasia.
I decided to create a – Stop Crime in Lenasia facebook event to promote the meeting. What I found out, many Lenasians were deeply concerned about the crime in their area. Having close family ties in Lenasia, basically married to it. I researched this topic a little bit more and found out that things in Lenz were getting out of control.
Just before Ramadan Areff Bawa, a crime fighter working for SA Rangers was killed as he was trying to stop a house break in. Seems like after this incident, people were shaken up. EWN said: Areff Ismail, 32, of the SA Rangers was killed after he and a group of community members were caught in a cross fire with heavily armed robbers at a house in Lenasia Ext 7. It is alleged that the same criminals were involved in another house robbery in Lenasia Ext 2 earlier in that morning, where three cars were stolen after the family was held at gunpoint
I added a post Stop crime meeting in Lenasia on my website. I also added some photos and a Lenasia Crime Alert section to the post about suspicious looking vehicle and guys found on other sites.
Lenasia was in the news that week. Headlines were sounding bleak and serious from Lenasia is under seige to Lenasia is under attack and even Jihad on crime. Things were getting intense. I was also visiting Lenasia for the weekend and was feeling a little scared. I attended the meeting and updated the facebook meeting as the speakers spoke – Stop crime in Lenasia meeting facebook event. People who till this moment who are sick and tired of crime in Lenasia attended the meeting in droves, sat there for hours in the hot midday sun even though most of the people were fasting. Shout, Lead SA, Yusuf Abramjee, Danny K, Kabelo, religious leaders, politicians and lastly Bheki Cele addressed the crowd. The crowd left there feeling half half. Most left feeling empty and felt like they were not heard and feeling as restless as ever.
