BEFORE- 2017
AFTER -2023
Buccleuch Spruits Day Clean up with Alexandra Water Warriors NPC for World Cleanup Day . They are all grown up. My children have been at it since 2017 trying to tackle this Jukskei River. They initially built a river dirt catcher with a pulley system in Buccleuch. At the time nothing like this was seen except for a milk bottle trap to stop dirt in Siligo creek. After the River Dirt Catcher was developed we see this kind of cheap effective litter trap everywhere around the world especially on the Hennops side. Later they built a River Dirt Catcher 2.0 at the World water day for Alexandra Water Warriors NPC and it was placed at the park near the cemetery. This one works well and has removed 1000s of tons of rubbish from the river and is still going strong. Despite my son being hospitalised after their first project in 2017 and hijacked in Alex near the litter trap site, when we went to fix the trap, they still carry on. Currently they working on best method to purify the Jukskei river water quality between Bacillus enzyme and Plants as a purifier. Researching cost effective ways of cleaning the river with minimal cost so that even poor disadvantages communities could build these effective methods with recycle materials and accessible plants around them. They received Silver medal all these years for their efforts with the River Dirt Catcher and finally they received Gold and the Plant category award for the research project at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists this year : Best water purifier between Plants and Bacillus Enzyme. Unlucky not to be recognised and chosen for the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists ISF for some odd reason even though this research is ground breaking and amazingly enough this last project mainly done by themselves with some guidance and supervision from mentors and parents. Currently we are working with UJ PEETS to build a wetland to purify the river at the very point they are standing. This river will be clean and as a family it is our mission to see this habitat restored to it’s pristine beauty and hope we see the day families in Alex and Buccleuch and along the entire Jukskei River enjoying picnicking, fishing, braaing and most of all safe around this toxic river.
