Friends Food Flavour Michael Olivier

Written by on December 28, 2021 in Book Club, Recipe

A collection of great South African recipes. Illustrated by Roelin Emmelman who puts a tin fish lucky star right at the start to make any expat who buys’s this book nostalgic as they turn through the pages. Ooh Lucky star..

Samoosas and biryani made it as one of the greats. This sweet and sour onions with moskonfyt seems interesting. What is moskonfyt? Seems like a grape jam. Wonder if that is halaal but that sweet sour onions maybe that needs to be tried. Soet patats. That makes you liss just saying the words, soet patats. Offal than does the direct opposite. I smelt that being cooked not very appetising. Proudly South African Malva Pudding made it’s debut. Shuh, i paged and paged and there they were koeksisters.
Really has the best of the best South African recipes. The only thing as I am strictly halaal, I will have to find the alternatives to all the wine and alcohol that was used in some of the recipes.

About the book:

Michael Olivier says Friends. Food. Flavour.  is the culmination of a long journey. He was invited by the Voyager Estate in Western Australia to prepare a ‘Cape Buffet’ for the duration of the Margaret River November Festival. He and his wife, Madeleine, researched, deconstructed, and rebuilt the recipes, leaving them with a collection of essentially Cape Dishes, which he wanted to publish.

Michael and Roelien Immelman, a very talented illustrative designer agreed to go in a partnership on Friends. Food. Flavour., and including the recipes of friends, the book was born. The dishes are eclectic with Roelien’s superb illustrations and Mike Robinson’s sensitive photography.
