An earth tremor was felt in parts of Johannesburg on Thursday night.

It shook the walls in suburbs including Greenside, Melville and Kensington shortly after 9pm.

“My windows were rattling. My dogs started barking. No house alarms went off,” Melville residents Carol Hills said after the tremor at 9.05pm.

“Bloody hell — just felt big earth tremor here in Johannesburg!!!” local resident David Tannahill wrote in a post on Twitter.

Mabine—Seabe wrote: “This earth tremor must be investigated by the highest seat in govt… Must be COSATU strikers.” Benoni residents didn’t feel it, neither did Soweto.

According to the Council for Geoscience’s website the last seismic event in Gauteng was on the far West Rand on Tuesday and measured 2.7 on the Richter scale.

On June 14 a quake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale was felt along the West Rand and parts of Johannesburg.
