I am a bit confused. Is the springbok staying or going? From what I read below it sounds like we will have a Springbok eating a Protea or something like that..

There is discussion that the Springbok represents the oppressive Apartheid era. Does this mean the buck in the R1(one rand) coin will also be replaced with a protea ? Imagine if you go into a cafee and ask the shopkeeper how much is it and the lingo changes from it is 100 bucks to 100 blom potte.. Imagine a car guard asking “Blommetjie asseblief”..

The SA Rugby Union (Saru) has already announced its intention to replace the Springbok with the King Protea on the traditional left breast of the national team’s rugby jersey – with the Springbok moving to the right breast alongside the sponsor’s logo.

Its detractors, however, have continued pushing for the controversial logo’s final extinction, despite former education minister and veteran ANC member Kader Asmal publicly welcoming Saru’s compromise on Thursday.

“[This] should signal the end of an emotion-charged and long-running debate. The vitriolic anti-Springbok posturing by some politicians is old-fashioned, anti-reconciliation and counterproductive to fashioning the united non-racial society we yearn for,” he said.

Saru’s decision to move the Springbok on the national jersey has yet to be discussed with Minister of Sport Makhenkesi Stofile.

At a recent national sports indaba in Durban, it was resolved by politicians and activists that the Springbok, “being a symbol of apartheid and oppression”, had no place on the national rugby jersey at all – left or right side.

Saru confirms decision on Bok emblem

The president’s council of the South African Rugby Union (Saru) has resolved to add the national sports emblem of the King Protea to the playing jersey of national rugby teams. The decision was taken at a special president’s council meeting on October 29 in Johannesburg.

Saru president Oregan Hoskins was mandated by the council to discuss the application of the emblem as soon as is practically feasible with the minister of sport at the minister’s earliest convenience. Saru can confirm that the meeting will take place on November 18 2008.

The council also noted legal advice that Saru is the sole proprietor and legal owner of the Springbok badge, emblem and trademark and would continue to wear the emblem alongside the King Protea on the national playing jersey.

Saru will not comment further on the matter until the conclusion of the meeting with the minister. — Sapa
