Helpful Hannah Hippo – Dino J Martins

When you touch the cover, it feels like you are touching a hippo. This book is for older children maybe gr 2 level after they have learnt to read simple books. As a bird enthusiast it was nice to see how the birds were illustrated in the book. Hannah the hippo and her friend Ollie the Oxpecker found a chick who was washed down the river in a flood. Hannah and Ollie try to find it’s nest. The go to all the different birds along the river. It is a great way to teach smallies the different birds. Plovers, Guinea fowls, Egyptian geese etc. Join Hannah and Ollie try to get this little chick back to her parents.

About the book: “Does anyone know who this little chick belongs to?” Hannah sets out to help a friend who is lost and on the way learns about the world around her. She meets lots of different creatures while on a journey at the hippo pools. Hannah, together with her friend Ollie Oxpecker, show one very simple yet powerful approach too empathy and understanding. This beautifully written and illustrated story by Dino Martins offers a glimpse on the value of friendship, kindness and compassion.
