The FORE – P&G Challenge

A University of the Witwatersrand Initiative

Assalaamualaikum Nanima

Our group – The FORE – is a group consisting of 10 individuals. These individuals are part of a group of 60 students chosen out of plus minus 620 students to attend the WITS SDLU Winter Leadership Camp 2012.

During the camp we were presented with a challenge by Proctor & Gamble (P&G). The challenge presented each group with the task of identifying any social issue or concern, finding a solution to this problem, and ultimately implementing this solution. We are required to use the knowledge and skills we acquired in the camp to complete this task.

The FORE identified a problem within the education sector, this problem being that there is a lack of easy access to valuable information along with no driving force to read. This problem exists particularly within disadvantaged schools.

As a solution to this problem we have chosen a disadvantaged school and decided to construct a basic library for the school. The reasons for choosing to construct a library are as follows:

  • It will promote reading
  • Sustainable
  • Provide easy access to information (including information of career choices)

After looking at a number of different schools we settled on Tsosoloso Ya Afrika Secondary School which is situated in Tembisa. The motive for picking this school is because it is situated in an underprivileged community, it is relatively new and hence constructing a library will assist in laying solid establishment for the school.

The school has space set aside for a library however there are only textbooks (which the learners already have) in it, and thus the library is not being utilised. In order to get the library to a point where it can be and will be used, many books are needed.

We primarily require books that will be of interest (fiction, non-fiction, magazines etc.) or help (encyclopaedias, biographies, and career info etc. – no textbooks) to high school students.

As this project is student driven and not funded by the university or P&G, we require donations to make this project a success.

It will be highly appreciated if you can help spread the word of this project so that anyone that has books which they no longer want or require can donate it for a good cause. Anyone that has books that they are willing to donate can contact me on any of the contact details I have listed below.
