THE DAY NANIMA PLAYED GOLF: Iwas sent an email to a corporate women’s golf day last year to celebrate women’s day. I thought is was a golf open day sponsored by this company so I entered my details into the website. I drove to the golf course thinking it was a day for amateur golfers wanting to play golf on a golf course. Dressed with my golf cap, golf shirt, golf shoes, I had trousers on as well and dressed like how the average women golfer dressed. Armed with my 7 iron, wood, pitching wedge and putter in my hands, I strolled to the registration desk. Surprised to see that this was a corporate golf day and these ladies were armed and dangerous. Dressed to the nines and armed with bags of golf equipment obviously knowing what they were about to do. Although I looked the part, I didn’t have a golf bag as I thought golf is an expensive game to play and I won’t invest millions until I know I want to play the game. I read that all you need to play the game was what I had with me. The other thing is I wasn’t part of the corporation that was hosting the event. When I went to the first fourball team I was allocated to not dressed in their corporate colours, with my 4 golf clubs in my hand, the only way I can describe this scenario is: Remember Pretty Women when Julia Roberts walked into hoity toity shops and the saleswomen were snobbish and cold towards her. Let’s say I felt the same way. The first team I was allocated to seemed to be real pros and very serious about the game. “Sy werk nie hier nie and sy het nie ‘n gholf bag nie”.

I was upset because I really thought it was a golf open day sponsored by this organisation for women who want to play golf but want to see if they up for it. I went back to registration table visibly upset. The organisers were cool first suggesting I go to the driving range and practise there.. like I don’t get enough of that at vodacom world of golf. When I told them I rather leave, they asked I really wanted to play. They borrowed me a golf bag and allocated me to another team. The nicest girls I have met in a long time. Laid back and obviously not as serious as the first lot. I was so unprepared for this game that I didn’t even have my own golf balls. After buying the balls, I went with my new friends on the golf cart and played. Getting better at it as the day progressed. Loosing a few balls, getting close to the hole with other shots. The other golfers encouraging and supportive after every shot good or bad.

I can really understand the fascination with golf. The environment is beautiful. The green grass. The tall trees. The zen like bunkers you try an avoid but always fall into. You have to rake the bunkers after you hit your shot. Feels like you in a Zen garden. Although I think the game still needs to grow on me and I obviously need to learn rules, the calm surrounding is very appealing. Walking through a golf course alone is soothing. i.e. if you obviously not a competitive golfer. I would like to take it up as a hobby. It is an expensive sport so need bucks. Since the first and last game I played, I have changed my dress sense and traded my golf cap hijab style to the real deal headscarf and modest dress. Wonder how the rules, regulations and etiquettes of golf will handle it if I pitch up there with my four golf clubs in my hand dressed in Hijaab.

Popular Golf Grip Techniques for women

You probably hold your lady golf clubs in a certain manner because you learned it like that. If you are happy with that and play well, keep it that way and don’t try to change your grip technique. That’s one of the main golf grip tips.

Interlocking Gripinterlocking golf grip

Used a lot by women. Because it’s an ideal grip technique for women with shorter fingers. You strech your right little finger and the left fore finger. For left handed lady golfers vise versa.

Overlapping Gripoverlapping golf grip
Suitable lady golf grip for women with strong wrists and arms. Both hands are one. You place the right little finger on the left fore finger or around the knuckel of that finger.

Golf Baseball Gripbaseball golf grip, all finger grip, 10 finger golf grip or palm grip

Ideal for women with small hands and for people with problems with stiff joints. Because you don’t have to cross your fingers or to strech them. You put all your 10 fingers on your club. Just like you hold a baseball bat: with your left and right hand away on the shaft. The club lays in the palm of your hand. It’s called the 10 finger golf grip.

Tiger Woods Workout

Wait, who is Tiger Woods?

Tiger Woods is an American professional golfer whose achievements to date rank him among the most successful golfers

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 (PS2)

After 31-year-old Tiger Woods won his 13th major at Southern Hills in August 2007, he said this, “Other guys have gotten tired. You see their shoulders slumping and dragging. I feel fine. You should always train hard and bust your butt. Not everyone considers golf a sport and they don’t treat it as such. They paid the price.”

1) Cardiovascular warm-up exercise (30 minutes) including treadmill, stair stepper or bike.

2) Total body stretching focusing on the muscles of the legs and trunk. A trainer assists him with physical therapy to help his body to prepare the joints for the rigors of swinging a golf club.

3) Core exercises (focusing in posture and balance)
These exercises are performed to strengthen the muscles that stabilize his body. Core training involves keeping the torso in place while taking his limbs through different movements. This workout helps to improve the muscles of the abdomen and back. These muscles are the key muscles needed for the twisting the body withstands during the golf swing. For example, Woods may sit on the medicine ball and perform dumbbell curl while trying to maintain his balance on the ball. He may also anchors long rubber bands to fixed positions and performs movements similar to the golf swing.

4) Endurance runs of seven miles (11 kilometers) and speed runs of three miles (five kilometers)

5) Weight training
Now, this is the most interesting part. On high-intensity days, he lifts 80 percent of his maximum weight doing exercises such as the bench press, the shoulder press and squats.

Keith Kleven did not disclose how much weight Woods is doing, but rumor said that Woods was bench pressing about 300 pounds (about 136 kilogram). Many doubt so. Yes, I do not think that he ever did that. Even if he does, he should not do it often. That load would put his shoulder joint at the risk of getting injured. Not a risk he is willing to take that might ruin his career.

Tiger Woods trains with weight machines, free weights, dumbbells and medicine balls. However, what Woods does differently from a typical weight lifter is that he tries to perform various exercises in movements and positions that mimic the golf swing. He works on his golf posture and grip strength by lifting dumbbells. Since the golf swing is a very dynamic movement, I suspect that most of Woods’ exercises are done that way and not just sitting doing isolation exercise for individual muscles.

Tiger Woods said that he does not have any ego in the gym. He believes that it is important to listen to his body when comes to pushing weight. Therefore, he never hurt himself by taking too much load. It is no surprise that he opts for high repetitions with smaller weights. These workouts include leg-press (with machine) and biceps-curl (with machine too) nowadays.

5) Cool down
Woods stretches again to cool down.

Some people are saying that Tiger Woods is taking steroid to be that muscular. May be these people just refuse to believe that the world richest golfer is working at gym hard to be in shape.

I do not play golf. Not a fan of Tiger Woods either. However, let’s agree that Tiger Woods is a champion. I hope that we can learn from a champion and not to discount his achievement by accusing him taking steroid. In fact, his physique is attainable by almost everyone, provided we work out like him consistently.

Some people also said that, “Hey, we all can build a physique like Tiger’s. Not that tough.” Yes. However, bear in mind that Tiger Woods is already 31 years old and to maintain the smooth range of motion on his swing while gaining that strength and mass, is just impressive. Don’t you agree?

Physical fitness is always a huge advantage in any sport. The fitter you are, the better you are in winning the games. So, the next time you see Woods winning another trophy, just remember that this guy trains hard at gym too. As he said, “I bust my butt to stay in shape.”

No joke, every champion works hard behind the scene.
