Post Rude Racist Halaal butcher
on: December 14, 2010, 16:55

Dear Nani Ma
I am writing this, hoping I would get some clarity on the issue of Qurbani & halaal butcheries.

Yesterday(13/12/2010) my sister, my partner &I went to the M@#@! Halaal butchery to have her Qurbani sheep sliced.
She did Qurbani then had a funeral in Durban & only returned in the weekend.
I had taken the carcass there last year more than a week after the qurbani last year.
There was no problem with it then, the butcher helped us slice it & charged us R60,00.

This year thinking the same would happen. We went there with the sheep carried by my Black partner as it was a
bigger sheep than last year. The butcher, hurried past us as he was outside.
He ordered my partner not to put the carcass down , bear in mind this is a frozen carcass.
He then shouted at him saying, This is a Halaal store! , to which I replied, pointing “My sister is Muslim & this is her Qurbani.” He then said he does not slice Qurbani sheep after Qurbani, because there was a special blade & a special machine that he has to use. I said thanks & I ushered my family out of the store because the butcher was being aggressive and rude.

We left the sheep back in the car & my sister went back to talk to the butcher, so did my partner as my sister is a single mother & we felt that we needed to defend her.
This time the butcher was very rude and swore at them. Using the “F” word freely and at them.
I even said to him that I had brought the carcass to him last year & he had no problem with it.
He said it was his shop & he will decide who he helps & who he doesn’t.
He also screamed at us while we were in the corridor of the shopping center saying to my partner that he should open his own butchery.
I believe he is racist & judgmental, how can a person of Islam look at a person & decide if he is Muslim or not? This was very embarrassing & belittling.

At this point I like to mention that my sister is revert, for 17 years.
Although she is divorced from her Muslim husband, still follows Islam & observes all the prayers.
She also encourages her children to follow the Islamic way of life.

Islam welcomes all, regardless. Its people like this man that give Islam a bad name.
Further, Its incidents like this, that question the teachings of Islam.
The fact that he is a Halaal butcher in M@#$@# means he has to serve the Muslim community.

Late yesterday, my sister practically begged him on the phone to cut the sheep, to which he said to her that her approach was wrong with regard to this issue.

Please inform me as to the correct procedure my sister needs to take in future.
Is this reason that he gave us true?

Regards

yasmin

r If it was me, I'd name and shame d butchery. Ppl who behave in dis fashion does not deserve any loyal customers. good muslim business men who behave in the proper islamic manner deserve the business. Every customer is important, irrespective of race colur or creed.

The behaviour sounds despicable. racism and discrimination are totally unacceptable behaviour in Islam. I agree that the butcher should be named and shamed, but perhaps first we could ask Nanima or someone to get and post their side of the story here first? That would be fair. As for the racist attitude, I do believe that some Muslims, like people of other faiths and beliefs, are susceptible to being racist at times. However, I have not read from your story anything that can be regarded as racist per se. Certainly bad behaviour and rudeness, & Loads of baseless assumptions by the butcher regarding the three of you.

Perhaps the butcher was - mistakenly - deeply concerned at the prospect of haraam meat being brought into his shop and either contaminating his product or appearing to do so? Further, since it is often impossible to tell what religion a person follows (even non-muslim males in this country wear topis/hats) he may have felt that he needed to make a rapid judgement call regarding a (strange/unknown) person walking into his shop with a carcass of unknown origins. Nevertheless, I don't condone his seemingly rash and abrasive actions in the least.
