Defacing The Spear

Written by on May 23, 2012 in News

The Spear is a painting by Cape Town-based South African artist, Brett Murray. It depicts South African President Jacob Zuma in a pose reminiscent of Lenin, with his genitals exposed. On Tuesday 22 May, 2 man walked into the Goodman Gallery with paint and in a smear campaign destroyed the  painting.  What was bizarre to see how a security guard WWE style tackled one of the protestors who wasn’t even resisting arrest.

The painting was distasteful and I think very irresponsible to publish it all over the place especially since kids could easily get hold of these images. It is unfortunate that humanity has left us and we can’t respect each other. What I find amusing one of the cartoons that was mocking this painting was talking about earning respect. Great way to teach someone respect by disrespecting them.

The freedom of expression debate goes on.

the best of all is that this painting is a copy of another painting of lenin or stalin with the face of zuma added and the open zip.. cant help but to laugh. its really funny!!! when the ruling party trash everything in the country, its acceptable, but when somebody comment on the president, six wives and 23 odd children the south african tax payer must upkeep, there’s almost a war. they should worry about farm murders, children and women being raped and murdered (like the five month old baby last week) and not about something meant as a joke!!!
