NANIMA'S PANCHAAT

THE MORAL OF THE STORY: Once upon a time, in a near land, very close to home, we had a tradition called bed time stories and fairy tales. There was Goldilocks and the three bears, Snow White and the seven dwarves, Rumplestilskin, , Red Riding hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and many other stories. Have you ever sat down and thought what is this story teaching my child, what is the moral of this story. Here's a quick summary: Goldilocks and the three bears: Goldilocks breaks into the three bears home, invades their personal space, eats their food, breaks their chairs and sleeps in their beds. When she gets caught she runs away. What is the felony: Breaking and entering, stealing, getting away with it? Now there are wanted posters on all the trees, all over the woods with an identikit of Goldilocks that baby bear described to the police. Snow white and the seven dwarves MORE

HAVE A GREAT LONG WEEKENDApparently no load shedding either. Great stuff. We will be back in May InshaAllah.
ROTTEN APPLES AT SCHOOL: A survey was conducted at a school and the problems identified by learners included: Smoking and drugs (dagga being sold),?Begging for lunches,?Bullying by older male learners, the woman serving at tuckshop is rude, Fighting after school,?Littering Gambling, inappropriate sexual contact, kissing in public, Learners did not take responsibility for their actions. They did not attend detention when they were told to, they "bunked" lessons, talked during class, Theft of fellow learners property (stationary, jewellery, bus tickets, money). Destruction of furnitiure and walls (desks were broken). Learners carrying weapons and cellphones.?Untidy uniforms. Learners swore at prefects, disrespect to teachers. I personally heard of incidents where teachers were assaulted and hit. What is the moral of the story?

NANIMA'S WISE WORDS

"I think we have a moral obligation to our children that can be easily summarized: number one, protect them from harm." Tom Allen

NANIMA'S REMEDY

DISCIPLINE- Jane Jarvis
Discipline should start at home. "To discipline" means to teach. It is an intervention designed to teach a new behaviour or way of thinking. "To punish" means to penalise, to cause pain, loss or suffering for a wrongdoing, or to treat in a harsh manner. Punishment does "work" in that it usually stops the misbehaviour immediately. But don't be fooled, the long-term results of punishment are usually negative. It leads to Resentment: This is unfair. I can't trust adults. Revenge: They are winning now but I will get even. Rebellion: I'll do it just the opposite to prove that I don't have to do it their way. Retreat Sneakiness: I won't get caught next time. Reduced self-esteem: I am a bad person.
PROVIDE EMOTIONAL SUPPORT : USE THE I CARE METHOD
I Interrupt Move people or objects. Send child off in different direction.
C Cool Off Positive time out. Send child to a quiet, relaxing or calming place. Encourage them to write down their concerns or simply lie on their bed and calm down. Use time to release anger (Remember rule: You may not hurt anyone or break anything when angry). Use this time to gather your own composure.
A Affirm Convey empathy for your child's feelings. Listening ("Tell me more about how you feel.") Understanding ("I understand how you feel.") Accepting ("I accept your feelings as real and valid from your point of view.") Identifying ("I would feel that way too.") Caring ("I wish you happiness and don't want you to have this painful feeling.") Desire to help ("How can I help you so that you will feel better?") Universal empathy statement "This is a hard time for you, isn't it?"
R Redirect Steer child in a new direction. "Fun Ideas" list is often useful here. Usually best to redirect only after the next step (Educate).
E Educate Explain in simple terms the domino effects of misbehaviour as well as the natural consequences. Try to identify the needs that your child is trying to meet through the behaviour and then teach more appropriate ways of meeting these needs. Use problem-solving approach. (Child needs to generate two or three options before acting. Encourage a STOP - THINK - ACT approach.) Also teach child to make reparation for behaviour (Sometimes saying sorry is enough!) Then redirect (see above.)

The motivating factor is to create a greater awareness in the diversity of religion as practiced by the peoples of South Africa, thereby working towards a much needed tolerance. It is presented in vignettes, each representing different cultures, themes and religions, which are insightful, sad, celebratory, often humorous and didactic in nature. MADALA'S GREEN FINGERS

Autumn Lawn Care If you have problem moss, deal with this first by spreading a mosskiller across the lawn.
Wait until the moss has died - it should take two weeks - and rake vigorously to remove along with old grass clippings and other debris.
Improve drainage by spiking with a garden fork. Push it into the lawn, wiggle it about and repeat every 10cm (4in).
Brush a sandy top dressing into the holes.
Finish by spreading an autumn lawn feed
