NANIMA'S PANCHAAT
BEGGAR MY NEIGHBOUR: Yesterday I was walking out of restaurant and I saw an elderly lady with her adult paraplegic child on her lap. I decided to give her something. When I gave her the money I was curious to know and asked her "why was she sitting there and isn't it uncomfortable for the child to be sitting like that there on her lap?" She was so insulted by my enquiry. Why am I asking her this question, I don't know what she is going through. She is homeless etc. I further enquired if she knew about the disability grants? She made at first as if she didn't know but eventually corrected me that it is R900 and asked if I will survive on that every month. When I went home this whole incident was still playing in my head. Was my action judged by my intention? I reexamined my intention. Did I ask this question because I wanted to assist, was I concerned about the child's uncomfortablness OR was I concerned about how uncomfortable this scene made me feel. I think it was a mixture of all, so maybe that why I was received with such hostility. It really makes you wonder what goes on in the heads of all the mother's sitting with their toddlers at the robots in the hot sun. It also makes you wonder how many blind beggars are found at nearly every intersection. I watched something very disturbing on TV once, it showed how someone broke a child's arms and legs so that he can become a beggar. Desperate times call for desperate measures. NANIMA'S WISE WORDS"It is a beggar's pride that he is not a thief" Japanese Proverb quotes NANIMA'S REMEDYPOVERTY ERADICATION - SELF SUFFICIENCY AND EMPOWERMENT Scott Miller developed the approach in order to systematically support communities in addressing poverty. By partnering impoverished families with those how have middle and upper income means, the community learns from both sides of the "tracks" what will work to reduce and eventually eliminate poverty Join a Circle: "People living in poverty need friendly contacts in the community as they find new ways to make ends meet." Encourage participation: "When properly motivated, places of worship and civic organizations will get involved in ending poverty." Give generously: "Seek out organizations that provide emergency cash while promoting long-term self-sufficiency and empowerment planning." Be alert to opportunities for helping people out of social isolation: "Bridge the gap to change their life and yours for the better." Poverty will no longer exist when enough people realize that it can and should be ended. Scott Miller Next time you see a beggar don't only give them a HANDOUT try and see if you can help them FIND a WAY OUT. E.g When you stop at a robot and see a blind person give him the number of an association around your area that can assist in empowering him to become self sufficient. If you see a street kid, give him numbers of associations dedicated to assist situations like his. If you are looking for poverty eradication institute numbers in your area contact me , I have a list of organizations in South Africa that are doing great work to eradicate poverty and empower the powerless NANIMA'S DIARYIf you scared to visit these places on your own, here are options to see the real South Africa.GautengSoweto Township Tour This City of four million people is the largest township in Gauteng. Eng Prem MADALA'S GREEN FINGERSFOOD GARDEN 101-Vegetables need a lot of sun. Choose a sunny spot. If your garden does not get sun all day, make sure that you put the garden where there is morning sun. Trees, hedges and buildings may cast shadows on your garden and so your plants will get less sunlight The vegetable garden should be close to your house so that it is easy to look after it. Out of sight, out of mind. It should be close to a source of water. Choose a place with the best possible soil (even if you have poor soil, it is easy to improve it by working in plenty of organic matter.) Once you have chosen the site, remove all grass, bushes, trees and their roots. Keep all this plant material for composting, mulching and filling trench beds. If you have limited space try and use containers that can be placed on your balcony or roof.
